The Order of Malta is engaged in constantly improving the livelihood of men, women and children. Our activities in all countries throughout the world are especially centred on the needs of the poor and handicapped people, regardless of race, religion or gender.

MOUNT KENYA SPONSORED CLIMB

In late March Gianfranco Cicogna climbed Mount Kenya to raise money to support the Community Health Worker component of the Malteser International Tuberculosis Project in the Nairobi Slums. Mount Kenya is African’s 2nd highest mountain – at 17,057ft above sea level – and no mean feat. Due to the rains that arrived in early March this climb was particularly challenging.

ST JOHN’S AMBULANCE-KENYA

We were invited to join the Lord Prior, Professor Anthony Mellows and his wife, for lunch during their visit to Kenya at the start of the year. During a visit they were interviewed on prime television to promote the idea to make it mandatory that every public service vehicle in Kenya has one first aider on board to assist in case of accidents (which are sadly all too common in Kenya). They suggested that some funding for this initiative comes from the government of Kenya, as currently the costs are being carried by St John’s ambulance alone.

Visitors from Scotland spend time with the Order of Malta projects in Kenya

In early February we were pleased to welcome a group of visitors from Scotland. Amongst them were two Companions of the Order of Malta. During their stay they visited the Kangemi HC and Remand Prison, two of the areas of Nairobi that Malteser International runs TB programmes.

LAMU DISTRICT MATERNITY SHELTER

We are continuing to assist and improve the condition of the maternity unit at Lamu District Hospital. Our vision is to provide a maternity shelter for the mothers to stay prior to giving birth.However, at the moment the facilities in the maternal wing of the hospital are so poor, that that must be our priority.
