Dec 20, 2013

Amidst joy and much emotion the Order celebrated its Christmas Mass at St. Joseph The Worker Church located in Kangemi slum. We fulfilled our wish to bring together 500 children with whom to share the celebration of the Feast of Christmas. For this we thank most sincerely the Parish priest, Fr. Pascal and his entire team for granting us this unique opportunity.

We were honoured to have H.E. the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo preside over Holy Mass with co-celebrants Fr. Pascal Mwijage (Parish Priest), Fr. Dave Ayotte (Jesam Development Office), Frs. Lawrence Kyaligonza, Siliac Malasi, Michael Mungai, Bernard Mallia (Jesuit Fathers) and Fr. Franco Cellana (Consolata Mission).

Among the congregation we were privileged to have the Ambassadors of Italy, Israel and Switzerland grace the event with their presence. In attendance were also Malteser International, the Venerable Order of St. John and friends of the Order of Malta including Commandant Brigadier Adrian Naughten, Chairman of the British Legion (Kenya).

Holy Mass was organized by the children themselves with the help of their teachers and animators. The Church was vibrant with song and dance and the celebration of Holy Mass was lively and participatory.

It took determination and selfless team work to make it possible to provide the children, at the end of the Mass, with over 600 blankets donated generously by British Airways. Our thanks go to Ms. Daria von Weyhausen of Blankets for Africa, BA staff in the person of Mr. Nicholas Liseche and the Order's friend Mr. Sam Mattock, for being instrumental in organizing the timely arrival of this donation. We could not have succeeded in this endeavour were it not for Dr. Franco De Paoli, First Counsellor, who played a leading role in obtaining the necessary authorization to import the blankets. The Embassy Office assistant Ms. Maria Pavlidis contributed with logistic support.

The Embassy also presented the children with a food parcel containing beans, rice, baking flour, maize flour, cooking oil and sweets. The First Counsellor's spouse Mrs. Marinella De Paoli worked tirelessly to organize the food parcels through the Nakumatt chain of supermarkets. To help present this gift to the exuberant children, H.E. Ambassador Prince Augusto Ruffo di Calabria was assisted by his spouse Princess Tana, H.E. the Apostolic Nuncio, the First Counsellor and his spouse, Counsellor Dr. Maria Enrica Bonatti Mameli, Advocate Mario Abate, Marquis Dino Mattoli Bisleti and Marquise Francesca Bisleti, and Their Excellencies the Ambassadors of Switzerland, Israel and Italy. And many more friends joined in!

We were extremely lucky with the weather which spared us the pouring rain at the most crucial moments, although the previous day's mud did test the ability of the drivers of Nakumatt and Katefreight in negotiating the slippery roads leading to the Church. Both drivers passed the test and we thank them for delivering the goods on time!

In the evening a festive season dinner was hosted at the Embassy residence, organized by the First Counsellor's spouse Mrs. Marinella De Paoli who skillfully created a convivial atmosphere accompanied by a delicious meal. Everyone agreed that it was a splendid time spent together. Among the invited guests were H.E. the Apostolic Nuncio, the Ambassadors and their spouses of Switzerland, Belgium, Israel and the European Union Delegation, the Ambassadors of Italy and the European Union Special Envoy for Somalia, the Director General of UNON, Marquis Dino Mattoli Bisleti and Marquise Francesca Bisleti, Fr. David Ayotte, Fr. Franco Cellana, Advocate Mario Abate, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mattock and Ms. Daria von Weyhausen. The Embassy was represented by H.E. Ambassador Prince Augusto Ruffo di Calabria and his spouse Princess Tana Ruffo di Calabria, First Counsellor Dr. Franco De Paoli and Mrs. Marinella De Paoli and Counsellor Dr. Maria Enrica Bonatti Mameli.

It was a memorable day and we take this opportunity to wish all our friends and readers a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful 2014 filled with good health and happiness!
